Graduation 2020 Information

CISD is moving forward with graduation ceremony plans on the originally scheduled date of May 23rd. Just this week, we received guidance from the Texas Education Agency regarding graduation ceremonies. Because Hemphill is a rural county that meets certain requirements, we are able to hold an outdoor graduation ceremony earlier than schools in more populated counties as long as we comply with the Governor's executive orders and TEA guidelines, including but not limited to:

- 5-guest cap per household
- social distancing of all participants
- pre-screening for symptoms of possible COVID-19
- assigned seating
- controlled access/parking

More populous counties in Texas may have outdoor ceremonies starting on May 29th as long as they comply with the executive orders and TEA guidelines. Again, because we would have to follow the same orders and restrictions even if we had a late summer graduation, we are moving forward with the original date of May 23rd. We will do our best to make this a memorable event for the CHS Class of 2020. The event will be live-streamed on the CHS Facebook page.

Parents & Students:

Canadian ISD wants to take this opportunity to let you know how grateful we are for our parents, students and community.  We are so fortunate to have faculty and staff members that are committed to serving our students and families here in Canadian.  We want to say thank you for the support during this time of remote instruction.  We recognize the challenges that come with our new remote learning environment.  We appreciate all the feedback you have given us as we implement this new system.

As we move further into the final six weeks grading period (began on April 6th), we want to assure you that our focus remains on doing what is best for our students and families during these challenging times.  We believe that feedback is essential to the learning process, and provides our students and parents with a way to monitor and measure student learning.  Beginning with April 6th in our gradebook, teachers will enter letter grades for assignments (as described in the next paragraph).  Every class will have one grade at the beginning of the final grading period that we are calling a Place Holder Grade (we will enter a 100 for that Place Holder Grade for every student).  The Place Holder Grade is just a blank grade that is required in our grade book program so that our teachers can start using the modified letter grades for remote instruction assignments.

During this time of closure, CISD will have a modified grading procedure.  We will not enter number grades for assignments given during remote instruction.  Furthermore, assignments given during the time of remote instruction will not be used for GPA calculation or class ranking.  Teachers will review student work and provide feedback.  Students are expected to complete work to receive credit in their coursesClick here to view the At-Home-Learning Grading Procedures and descriptions of the grades below:

  • Meets Expectations (ME)
  • Approaches Expectations (AE)
  • Failed to Meet Expectations (F)
  • Incomplete (I)

Please contact your teacher(s) or campus principals if you have questions.

Parent Portal Update:

We are using letter grades during this closure period for the final grading period. Because of this, parents have a somewhat altered view when looking at student progress.

Login to Parent Portal and make sure to tap on the GRADES button to the left and then click CYCLE & SEMESTER GRADES. This is where you will be able to scroll through and check for progress in relation to your student. If you are using your phone you may want to make sure you have the screen in the most horizontal position for the best view. The view from a computer screen is the most user friendly.

If you need a Parent Portal account, you need to contact your school. You will not receive grade alerts like before during closure because we are not entering numerical grades for the final grading period during closure.

It is a good idea to periodically check the portal to support your student and their progress.

We appreciate you all. Feel free to call any school or the technology office for questions.
